It’s a matter of serious concern that number of persons suffering from Mental Depression is escalating in geometric progression throughout the world. World Health Organization (WHO) has also expressed apprehension over the issue in its recent report. Though apparently innocent, but depression gives birth to many physical and other mental aliments. This not only affects personal and family life of the patient but also poses threat to a country and nation as a whole. Let’s have a peep into the reasons of stress and the available remedies which may help to combat the problem.

Reasons of Depression: -

Man is a social animal:- Social mix up often helps in reducing the tension and creating a congenial atmosphere in the society and in personal life also. Sense of rivalry by comparing the official position or the assets and wealth of the neighbors must not secure a place in our mind, because this will lead to envy and finally tension.

Competition in daily life :- Today’s busy schedule of work and rat race competition for career, particularly for professionals and office workers, transform them psychiatrically handicapped as a victim of stress.

Congenial ambiance in the family ---Study reveals that the root cause of mental stress in several cases traces back to the turmoil family environment. Mental development of a person depends mainly on the family atmosphere. If the harmony and peace of a family is disturbed, a child grows with feelings of uncertainty and develops a rude and adamant nature. In later life he becomes a tension prone personality.

Male members being the bread earners of the family, encounter several constraints right from office, family, children, and from several other fronts.

A person who undergoes several pressures in the outside world, quite obviously requires to get released his tension in the home. Instead, if the troubled atmosphere in the home induces some more problems to his life, the person becomes a prey of stress and thereby develops depression. Therefore, absence of peace and harmony in the family may be attributed as one of the main factors behind Depression.

Feelings of Negligence— This is applicable particularly for old populace. Being detached from the pivot of activity, since the main anchor of the family changes hand by this time, they feel lonely and neglected if adequate time and company is not provided to them by other members of the family.

Conjugal Life--- Understanding between the partners plays a great role in maintaining balance in the family. If there exits any clash of ego or misunderstanding between the two, the imbalance leads to tension. One of the two or even both may be much successful in their respective field of activity, but the most important notion must be, to tolerate each other and to sacrifice for the partner. Cooperation should prevail and not the Competition.

Women versus men—Women are much susceptible to depression because of very nature of hormonal interference at different stages of life. There happens serious hormonal imbalance during adolescence as well as during child birth. Again during menopause, physical as well as mental structure gets affected, and outcome becomes apparent in the form of tension and depression.

Study and Career related stress-- This has become a common phenomenon for children and student. From the very beginning of the school life the children are pushed in to the arena of stiff competition. To cope up with the skyrocketing expectation of the parents, the students are forced to forego their natural childhood. A sense of fear and lack of confidence about performance is implanted in their mind which in many cases converts the child into a mental patient.

Occurrence of dreaded disease: - Several people build up depression and nervous breakdown due to occurrence of dreaded diseases like cancer etc.

Diagnosis— Following are the common symptoms which emit danger signal that indicates the presence of the disease.

1. Change in behavior—someone becomes rude, adamant and irritating nature.
2. Sometimes the person cannot tolerate noise or laughter.
3. Reduction of sleep
3. A Sociable man slowly being converted to unusually silent
4. Avoid company or entertainment, prefers to stay alone.
5. Diminishing desire for sex
6. Thinks himself hopeless and helpless.
7. Raises questions about necessity of living.

Remedy—An affected person should be attended with utmost compassion, all effort should be initiated to understand the reason behind such depression. Children should never be scolded; instead, their problem should be fixed first. A sympathetic attitude with proper intervention for eradication of the responsible factor works miracle. For girls, sometimes, the reason traces back to their childhood, right from the date of hormonal and physical change. Sometimes they feel unsecured even after marriage. A thorough study of family antecedent as to whether depressive illness was there for anyone earlier in the family may help in treatment and thereby recovery of the patient. Psychoanalysis followed by psychotherapy by professional counselor may be required to bring a better result.

Male member of the family, particularly the bread earner, should invariably make his pecuniary planning. Works should be planned in such a manner so as to avoid hurry and tension. Relaxing is essential, a segment of time should invariably be segregated for relaxing, listening to favored music or being engaged to some activity of own choice which can bring happiness to mind and soul.

Inculcating the habit of giving patient listening to others goes a long way in lessening the tension and stress of mind.

Everyone should transform himself to changing environment and develop a habit of tolerance so that behavior of others may not build up unnecessary pressure on him.

Physical exercise helps a lot; it must be practiced daily, because a healthy mind lives in a healthy body.

In spite of all these preventive measures, even if the symptoms persist, counseling by a psychotherapist may be started at the earliest. Problem should be given due importance from the inception and never be avoided.

Encounters with Good

Encounters with God

Anthony Strano explains what happens when we have a direct personal relationship with God and why it is important.

I remember when I was thirteen and I thought, “What am I going to do with my life? I’ve got the energy of youth, the aspirations of youth—what will I do?” I was growing up in Australia, a very free country; you can practically do anything you like at that age. I picked up the Bible and opened it. It opened at the place where God was asking Solomon, “What is it that you would like most of all?” I was surprised. Solomon didn’t ask for more money or a bigger palace or anything like that; he just said, “I would like to have wisdom.”

I thought, “That’s a good thing to ask for, to be wise and understanding.” Further on I read, “Beware of youth! Youth is like the green grass. Today it is fresh and glowing and tomorrow it will be dry and the wind will come and just blow it away.” So I started thinking, “When I’m thirty or forty and I look back on what I have done, what will I say? Will I be happy with the decisions I made?” I remember that whole day, just staying in silence. I always liked silence. It was a mirror through which I could understand many things, not analytically, but I could feel them. I had a characteristic that I never quite trusted my own perception about things. I felt it was easy to delude yourself, so one must always have a point inside oneself from which one is observing.

One Christmas Day, I woke up very early and decided to go into the forest. It was just around dawn and there was an oval fir tree with a lot of dew on it. I was watching it. The sun rose higher and higher and rays of light hit the drops of dew and the wind started to blow. It was a beautiful experience, all those drops of dew starting to reflect many different colors—green and blue and red and yellow—and as the wind was blowing lightly the colors were changing. It was like a Christmas gift to me, nature’s Christmas tree. Then of course the sun rose completely and all that finished. I thought it would be nice to be like one of those drops, somehow able to reflect something hidden, something silent, but also very beautiful.

I began to realize that to have a true connection with yourself, with God, with other people, it is important to keep a very deep faith and a very consistent humility, because the faith in yourself, in God and in other people helps you to go beyond many difficulties, doubts and tests, and makes you confident that—even though you may not understand—there is always a solution. You also need humility to never ever get into the trap that ‘I KNOW’. Always keep the self open, for only when I am open is truth given to the self as a gift. All divine things are gifts; the only effort one needs to make is to position the self in such a way that one is able to receive those gifts. As one receives those gifts they increase as one shares them. But you share them simply as an instrument—not as one who made the gifts. Whether it is of wisdom, of peace, of happiness—those were given, absorbed and shared.

As you read about others’ encounters with God, you find with some that it transforms their life, becomes the foundation of all their life. Others have it but then forget it, and get lost in routine again, lose the awareness, the wonder of that encounter. When there is a genuine encounter with the divine, the human being feels three things—deep transformation, deep insight and great inspiration.

TRANSFORMATION
Transformation is driven by the desire to really change the self, to return to something pure and original that has been forgotten or that has been polluted, and knowing very deeply that if there has been this transformation within the self then certainly one will be in a position to help and co-operate with other human beings. A deep transformation only comes when there is that encounter with God, because what transforms the depths of the self is love. If God remains abstract, as for many people, then there is very little transformation. When God becomes personal and real then one is able to experience the relationship, and it is through relationship that one begins to experience the love that gives one faith in oneself and the courage to change.

INSIGHT
The encounter, which is silent and very personal, often cannot be described. In some ways it shouldn’t be described too much. In the silence there arises insight. Insight is the opening of the third eye and spiritual blindness is taken away—in particular the blindness of being very critical about things and people, of getting lost in weaknesses of others and caught up in trivial things. Insight is where I am able to see the positive reality of others, no matter what their appearance may be, no matter how negative they may appear to be. The insight of someone who has encountered God is to see through God’s eyes, to be able to see others as one’s brother or one’s sister. It is this insight that starts to create a sense of unity and friendship, and a sense of belonging to all.

INSPIRATION
A personal encounter with God also gives me great inspiration. The impossible can become possible. There’s nothing that I can’t do. There is always that support, acceptance, faithfulness from God in His relationship with you. He doesn’t abandon damage or diminish you, but holds you. You are sacred to Him. It is great inspiration when you feel this, not just knowing it intellectually but also feeling it.

From abstract to real, this is something we all have to make an effort for. That comes from going into stillness, silence and listening. When there is this encounter, one’s faith and courage are empowered. There are always tests, problems, difficulties, but one always has that strength to overcome them because one is now able to look and see with another ‘eye’. One sees with an invisible eye, you hear with another ear, an invisible ear. One does not have to see everything ready and tangible in front. I don’t have to see the solution because I know it’s there and it comes at the right time. The person who has a genuine encounter and ongoing experience develops a lot of kindness, generosity, tolerance—but especially non-violence. They never think they are better or superior, or inferior. There is a feeling of equality with others—that others are as good as me, that whatever good I have in my own self, others have it also.

When you have that genuine encounter with God, the vision of universality is restored and there is an attention on personal change and giving. There is never an inflated sense of superiority. However many forget to protect their genuine encounter with God with humility and self-respect. Instead they start to say, “I saw this vision, I saw this light, and I got this message.” So what did I do with the message, with the light? Did I grow? Growth is measured by the respect I have for others and the non-violent attitude towards all things. I accept any differences as something divine and enhancing for the world; I realize such differences do not limit but enrich.

One thing is very important in cultivating our encounters with God. While we have to make an effort in our movement towards God, equally we need to be aware of the point at which to stop, to be still, and be guided. We grow up in the West feeling that we have to create everything, we have to make it happen, that it’s up to us. It is in a way, but it’s not all up to me. Sometimes I just have to position myself. When I first went to learn meditation as a method to get closer to God I had very good experiences of God, which I didn’t expect so quickly. I remember, the very first time, feeling God, not just as the Father, but as the Mother. I had never thought about the Motherhood of God before, but as the rather traditional Fatherhood. I had the feeling of God, my eternal Mother, looking at me sweetly and whispering. “I love you as you are, you do not have to prove yourself. You are what you are and I love and accept that. But, yes, make the effort to change, to awaken the purer part of the self and this will bring you great joy.” Quickly afterwards I felt the Fatherhood of God, like a wave of great gentleness soothing the self. He was definitely not ‘the stern authority in charge’, which I had learnt about in school.

I never felt God was really strict and authoritarian anyway. As well as a Mother and Father, He was a wise and concerned Teacher trying to keep me on the right path.

When I was very young and some adults were upset with me they told me, “God is looking at you and only forgives you 3 times if you are naughty.” I got really afraid because I know l had been naughty many more times than just 3. Everyday, my naughtiness or ‘mistakes’ were in the vicinity of at least 33! because one day I had made a conscious count of my ‘sins’. When you are very young the things you are told impress themselves on you. But deep down I thought, “I’m sure God’s not like that. God doesn’t measure.” God is a Friend. And the blessing of such a benevolent friendship is a true gift from Him.

My own experience with meditation has been that when I step into silence and I tune my mind and connect with this Benevolent Point, this Point of Benevolence for all of the universe, when I can connect to that current, then I fill myself, not just with light, but with deep compassion and understanding. In that compassion and understanding, there is change in the self, attitudes, vision towards others. This is why, when people say God, Allah or Father and then there is a lot of violence in their behaviour towards others, it is clear that they are very far from God. The one who is pure cannot be violent, cannot give sorrow. In silence we have that encounter with the Benevolent One. Then we are able to feel ourselves lifted, our consciousness is lifted and made positive, encompassing, and reconciling with other souls. We feel the joy of being alive, of being a human being. We don’t reject anything and we don’t get attached to anything, because both poles do not keep the balance and the harmony necessary to maintain joy.

When we have an encounter with God we experience God’s Fatherhood, God’s Motherhood and above all God’s friendship, sweet friendship. Yes, the ancient Egyptians were very right, God the Father, the Mother, is the Lord of Sweetness, and it is that sweetness that takes away the bitterness of the past and enables us to experience the power of forgiveness, to let go of things, not hold grudges. When there is that forgiveness for my own self then I can start to realize who I can really be.

This love-filled transformation makes a human being spiritual. A true relationship transforms and frees you, it does not bind and limit. When we encounter God as He truly is, then our consciousness ascends to a level of universality and compassion where there are no barriers of resentment, accusation or fear.

To be able to keep your courage, faith and principles, even in times of opposition, and to keep a kind eye on those who oppose you—this is spiritual! This is the ability to have mercy and compassion towards those who criticize and oppose. It’s not just a question of being stable and strong but having a kind eye for everyone. For that we require the sustenance of a personal relationship with God or else we can’t do it. If I don’t feel that relationship, I can be kind once or twice to people who are negative towards me, but to keep doing it requires a very positive, continuous flow of strength within the self. This is why meditation is important, not just for the self, but also for others. It’s in meditation that I get close to God and experience the power he is constantly offering me. This closeness to God is called bliss. Bliss is an experience that is internal, beyond touch, sight or anything physical and no-one can ever take that away from me. I carry it within myself.

Women and Spirituality

In a world where women have been seen traditionally as someone's wife, mother, daughter, or sister, why would a woman choose to follow a spiritual path?

Perhaps because, deep inside every woman has a longing to “be” someone in her own right—fully aware of herself, confident and in control. When we talk of spiritual power, we are in fact referring to the original power of the self to be whole and independent—free from the web of domination and suppression, free from the need to exist for someone else's sake.

For the last two thousand years or more, women have not fully utilised their spiritual power. Instead, aspects of the “feminine” have taken mainly symbolic forms from the Virgin Mary to the vestal virgins, from Earth Goddesses to the Shakti Devis. On the one hand, women have been put on pedestals and worshipped on account of their purity or femininity. At the same time, they have been excluded from religious practices and barred, even until now, from entering some places of worship.

Elevated or chastised, exonerated or condemned, the main problem facing women is that they have never been treated as equal to men—either as spiritual leaders or spiritual seekers. This lack of equality finds its roots not only in sociological and cultural systems, but more particularly within levels of consciousness upon which spirituality and attitudes are ultimately based.

Women as Spiritual Leaders
Women become spiritual leaders when they themselves acknowledge they have the capacity and necessary attributes to play such a role. The change of consciousness needed is to move away from unworthy feelings and attitudes and to see the greatness contained within the self. Feminine qualities such as love, tolerance, compassion, understanding and humility are qualities of leadership. They are also needed for spiritual progress, for without them it would be impossible to come close to God and attain self-realisation. Every human being possesses those qualities but women are more easily and naturally able to tap them, for feelings of love and devotion are often more natural to women, combined with a profound sense of discipline and order. A true leader leads through example.

Women know how to serve and how to give. Often the notion of service or of putting others in front has been seen as a sign of weakness or lack of power. Quite the opposite is true. The ability to bow before others, with true humility, is the sign of the greatness of a soul who has conquered ego.

However this quality of giving to others must also be balanced with qualities of courage, determination, clear thinking and self-respect. Too often, women have a tendency to give to others and neglect their own spiritual needs. It is one of the major reasons women find themselves depleted and lacking in spiritual power. The foundation for assuming spiritual leadership is thus a change of consciousness. Overcoming the huge physical, religious and sociological barriers which have prevented women becoming spiritual leaders can only be done through the development of self-respect. The quality of self-respect comes from the knowledge and experience of the eternal self which is beyond social, cultural or physical identity. The eternal self or soul is pure, peaceful and complete with divine and spiritual qualities. When women touch this inner, eternal core, they gain the courage to play the part they are capable of.

Spiritual power is an expression of the inherent qualities of the spirit and has nothing to do with gender or physical limitations. Feelings of domination or suppression occur when there is the awareness of superiority or inferiority. Feelings of equality, however, manifest when there is the consciousness of spirit or soul. These feelings and attitudes can be expressed in actions with positive results.

Women are still a long way from enjoying positions of spiritual leadership, and society still doesn't fully concur with the notion that women make good spiritual leaders. Yet, society won’t necessarily change until someone, whether an individual or a group of individuals, breaks the tradition and sets a new role model.

How to Tap the Enormous Power of Your Subconscious Mind

You have available to you, right now, a power like a supercomputer that can enable you to solve any problem, overcome any obstacle and achieve any goal you can set for yourself.

This power has been used throughout history to take people from rags to riches, from poverty and obscurity to success and fame, from unhappiness and frustration to joy and self-fulfillment. And it can do the same for you.

This power has been called many things by many people in many places. It is the fundamental principle of most religions, philosophies and metaphysical teachings. It underlies much of psychology and is the cornerstone of all success and achievement.

In its simplest terms, it is called the "subconscious mind," although this is a misunderstanding because the true subconscious mind is merely a memory bank of senses and impressions that reacts automatically based on your previous experiences.

It has also been called the "universal subconscious mind" and the "collective unconscious."

The great Austrian psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, referred to this as the "superconscious mind." He felt that the collective wisdom and knowledge of all the ages was contained in this superconscious mind and was available to everyone.

Ralph Waldo Emerson referred to it as the "oversoul" and wrote that, "We live in the lap of an immense intelligence that, when we are in its presence, we realize that it is far beyond our human mind." Emerson, the great American transcendentalist, felt that all power and possibility for the average person came from using this mind on a regular basis.

Napoleon Hill, perhaps the greatest researcher on success of the 20th century, called this power the "infinite intelligence." After spending more than 20 years interviewing 500 of the most successful men and women alive in America at that time, he concluded that, without exception, their ability to tap into this higher form of infinite intelligence was the primary reason for their great success in life.

YOUR SUPERCONSCIOUS MIND CAN ACCESS EVERY PIECE OF INFORMATION IN THE UNIVERSAL MIND

Whenever you see, read, listen to, or experience a great achievement of any kind that touches something deep inside you, you are witness to a superconscious creation.
Your superconscious mind can access every piece of information stored in your conscious and subconscious minds. It can also access data and ideas outside your own experience, because it actually lies outside your human mind. This is why it is called a form of universal or infinite intelligence.

You will often get ideas that come to you from far beyond you. It is not unusual for two people separated by thousands of miles of distance to come up with the same idea at the same time. When you are well-attuned to another person, such as your spouse or mate, you will often have thoughts identical to him or her at the same time during the day, and you will only find out that you had reached the same conclusion when you compare notes hours later.

This is an example of your superconscious mind at work. Your superconscious mind is capable of goal-oriented motivation. When you are working determinedly toward a goal of your own choosing, your superconscious mind will generate a continuous flow of ideas and energy to help you move onward. In fact, your superconscious mind is a form of "free energy." This free energy becomes available to you when you become excited or inspired about achieving something that is really important to you. You seem to be able to continue hour after hour without fatigue.

Sometimes you even forget to eat, and you need far less sleep than you would normally. After you have achieved your goal, you may collapse in exhaustion, but while you are moving toward it, you seem to be flowing with continuous energy and enthusiasm.

YOUR SUPERCONSCIOUS MIND AUTOMATICALLY SOLVES EVERY PROBLEM ON THE WAY TO YOUR GOAL

Your superconscious mind automatically and continually solves every problem on the way to your goal, as long as your goal is clear. Your superconscious mind will also give you the lessons and experiences that you need to succeed, in the form of setbacks, problems, frustrations and temporary failures.

Your superconscious mind will also bring you the exact answer you require to solve your problem or achieve your goal, exactly when you are ready for it. When your superconscious mind gives you a hunch or an inspiration, remember, this is time-dated material. You must act on it immediately.

I've had many experiences of wrestling with a problem that I have been unable to resolve until the last minute. Then, right when I need it, the answer becomes perfectly clear. This will happen to you as well when you use the power of your superconscious mind.

The critical factor in using your superconscious mind is your attitude. Your superconscious mind functions best with an attitude of calm, confident expectations. When you adopt an attitude of faith and acceptance, when you confidently accept and believe that everything that is happening to you is moving you progressively toward the achievement of your goal, your superconscious mind seems to come alive, like all the lights have been turned on in a room.

This is why successful people seem to have tremendous clarity concerning what they want, along with tremendous calmness and confidence regarding their ability to achieve it. This combination of attitudes will throw the power switch on your superconscious abilities.

Because of your superconscious powers, anything that you can hold in your mind on a continuing basis, you can have. Emerson wrote, "A man becomes what he thinks about, most of the time." Earl Nightingale wrote, "You become what you think about." In the Bible it says that, "Whatsoever a man soweth, that also shall he reap." And this law of sowing and reaping refers to mental states; to your thoughts. Of course, there is a potential danger in the use of your superconscious mind. It is like fire - a wonderful servant, but a terrible master. If you use it improperly, and think negative, fearful thoughts, your superconscious mind will accept your thoughts as a command and go to work to materialize them into your reality.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE AND UNSUCCESSFUL PEOPLE

What is the difference between successful people and unsuccessful people? It is as simple as this: Successful people think and talk about what they want, and unsuccessful people talk about what they don't want.

So here is a 10-step plan for plugging into your superconscious power to get what you truly want in life. Make this plan a regular habit, and you will be astonished at the results.

1. Decide exactly what you want. This is usually the biggest problem that people have. They don't know what they want and then they're surprised when they don't get it.

2. Write your goal clearly in every detail. A goal that is not written down is merely a wish. When you write it down, you signal to your superconscious mind that you really want to accomplish this particular objective.

3. Write your goal in simple, present tense words on a three-by-five index card and carry it with you to read and re-read throughout the day whenever you get a chance.

4. Make a list of everything you can think of that you can do that will move you toward your goal. Making a list intensifies your desire and deepens your belief that the attainment of the goal is possible for you.

5. Organize the list by priority. What is more important and what is less important?

6. Resolve to take action every day on one of the items on your list. Do something every day that moves you toward your goal so that you can maintain your momentum.

7. Visualize your goal repeatedly. See it in your mind's eye as though it were already a reality. The more clear and vivid your mental picture of your goal, the faster it will come into your life.

8. Get the feeling of pleasure and enjoyment that you would have if your goal were realized at this very moment. Create the emotion of happiness, satisfaction, and pleasure that you would have if you really achieved your goal.

9. Confidently behave as if your superconscious mind were bringing your goal into reality. Accept that you are moving toward your goal and it is moving toward you.

10. Release your goal completely to your superconscious mind. When you turn your goal over to the power of the universe and just get out of the way, you will always know the right actions to take at the right time.

Starting today, try this power of yours, your superconscious mind, on one goal or idea, and practice it continually until you succeed in achieving that goal. By doing so, you will move from the "positive thinking" of the hopeful person to the "positive knowing" of the totally successful person.
